What were "indentured servants"? The first Africans that were brought to the American colonies were not slaves, but so-called indentured servants. These Africans were forced to work for a certain period of time in exchange for transportation, food and room. After some years, they were free again. But of course, they worked involuntarily.
What was the "cotton gin"? Southern planters were in need of a way to make the growing of cotton profitable. Cotton had sticky green seeds that were time-consuming to pick out of the white cotton balls. The cotton gin was an engine that made growing cotton again profitable.
What was the Fugitive Slave Act? As there were Southern states that were slave-holding and Northern states that were not slave-holding, some slaves in the South escaped their masters and went to the North. Thus, the Fugitive Slave Act was passed. According to this, escaped slaves had to be returned to their masters and officials and citizens of free states had to cooperate in this law.
